What is it?
Microdermabrasion is literally a superficial sanding of the skin, resulting in exfoliation of thickened epidermis and results in a smoother more even appearing skin texture and tone.Microdermabrasion involves the use of tiny particles blown onto the skin and vacuumed away in close loop type of systems. This helps remove the more superficial skin cells, revealing the fresher, healthier skin below. The process is a safe, gradual treatment performed in multiple sessions to improve the skin without the harsh effects of chemicals and some deeper laser procedures. Fine layers of skin are gently removed during each microdermabrasion session.
Which skin problems can be improved with microdermabrasion?
- Uneven skin tone or texture.
- Reducing skin “dullness” that accompanies aging skin.
- Some stretch marks.
- Opening blackheads and keeping pores clean.
- Softening some acne scars and some other forms of scarring.
- Smoothing out fine wrinkle lines.
- Age spots on the face, extensor forearms and back of the hands.
Are there any adverse effects?
Minimal temporary redness or flushing may be present after microdermabrasion. Your face will look like you have just been exercising, giving you a slight flush with a healthy glow.
If any scabbing or crusting does appear, it will be minimal and can be treated with gentle skin cleansing and an application of topical antibiotic ointment such as Polysporin cream. Your regular makeup can be used immediately after the peel if you wish.
How often can it be performed?
We recommend one or two weeks in between treatments for most conditions. Depending on the skin condition being treated, a shorter or longer treatment schedule may be recommended.
Pre-consultations are required before microdermabrasions are performed. Microdermabrasion of the face can be performed in 30 minutes.
Is it painful?
Not really. Microdermabrasion may sting a little around the eye area. We will normally increase the treatment strength each session to increase the penetration to the skin. Your skin may feel a little hot and appear a little pink immediately following your treatment.
You should tell us immediately if your treatment is too uncomfortable. We can turn down the controls if the suction or level of the “blast” is too strong for you.
How many treatments will be necessary?
Microdermabrasion is a gradual process that requires multiple treatments. Some superficial conditions including: shallow brown age spots, tired aged skin, and large pores may improve in a few treatment sessions. Fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged skin, and other deeper skin problems will require more treatments.
For most conditions a series of 5-6 treatments is initially recommended but there is, if necessary, no limit to the number of treatments that can be performed. It is important that a 7-10 days recovery time be allowed between each microdermabrassion session.
Can it be used on all skin types?
Yes. One of the great advantages of microdermabrasion is its safe application for all skin types. Unlike chemical peels and some laser procedures, microdermabrasion can be used safely with minimal risk of pigment problems. This is possible because microdermabrasion is very gentle and involves removing superficial layers of skin with very little damage to the normal skin pigment.
The face is the focus area of treatment, but the neck, upper chest, forearms and the back of the hands can be treated.
How do I prepare for a treatment?
To be treated, the skin should be clean, dry and free of oil before the microdermabrasion is performed. The skin should be free of rashes, sunburns and other irritations before microdermabrasiones are performed.
